Do You Have to Have a Fence Around a Pool in Michigan?

Yes—if your pool is deeper than 24 inches, Michigan law requires it to be enclosed with a compliant fence.

This law protects children, pets, and neighbors from accidental injury or drowning.

Michigan Pool Fence Law at a Glance

  • Minimum 4’ fence height
  • Self-latching, self-closing gates
  • Non-climbable materials with < 4″ spacing

This law applies to in-ground pools, above-ground pools (depending on access), and temporary setups if water depth exceeds 24″.

Exceptions

If the home’s structure prevents access to the pool (e.g. locking doors with alarms), some municipalities may allow that as a substitute—but always check locally.
